Solar power is the most practical option for most NZ locations — pair rooftop panels with battery storage (Tesla Powerwall, BYD or Pylontech) for full off-grid capability. Panels last 25+ years with minimal maintenance. Wind turbines and micro-hydro systems are also available for suitable sites.

Rainwater harvesting works beautifully for tiny homes. A roof catchment system feeds into storage tanks (1,000–30,000L), filtered through mesh screens, sediment filters and UV purifiers. We recommend approximately 1,000 litres of storage per 100m² of roof area.

Composting toilets (Nature's Head, Separett Villa) require no water and no sewer connection — ideal for off-grid living. Biogas systems convert waste into usable methane. For grid-connected sites, low-flow dual-flush options (Caroma, Grohe) minimise water use significantly.
